Scientific Insights from SOHO, 2003 -2005: Helioseismology and Solar Interior

چکیده

Recently determined heavy element abundances 1-3 have led to significant changes in our understanding of the internal structure and constitution of the Sun. It turns out that the standard solar models calculated with the new abundances are significantly different from the helioseismic results which were in a good agreement with the previous solar models. Figure 1 shows the relative difference between the MDI measurements of the soundspeed profile inside the Sun and various solar models. The solid curve shows the difference for a standard solar model with the previously known solar composition. The dotted curve shows this difference for the standard model computed with the new composition which has lower abundances of oxygen and iron as determined spectroscopically by Asplund).

Diagnostics of Plasma Dynamics and Magnetism Inside the Sun by Helioseismology

Helioseismology observations from space missions SOHO and Hinode have provided tremendous amount of new information about thermodynamic properties and dynamics of plasma in the solar interior. The helioseismic diagnostics are based on measuring oscillation frequencies and travel times of acoustic waves excited by turbulent convection in subsurface layers. These diagnostics give us new insights ...

Imaging the Solar Tachocline by Time-Distance Helioseismology

The solar tachocline at the bottom of the convection zone is an important region for the dynamics of the Sun and the solar dynamo. In this region, the sound speed inferred by global helioseismology exhibits a bump of approximately 0.4% relative to the standard solar model. Global helioseismology does not provide any information on possible latitudinal variations or asymmetries between the North...

Time Distance Study of Isolated Sunspots

We present a comparative seismic study of conditions around and beneath isolated sunspots. Using the European Grid of Solar Observations’ Solar Feature Catalogue of sunspots derived from SOHO/MDI continuum and magnetogram data, 1996-2005, we identify a set of isolated sunspots by checking that within a Carrington Rotation there were no other spots detected in the vicinity. We then use level-2 t...

Helioseismic test of non-homologous solar radius changes with the 11-year activity cycle

Recent models of variations of the Sun’s structure with the 11-year activity cycle by Sofia et al. (2005) predict strong non-homologous changes of the radius of subsurface layers, due to subsurface magnetic fields and field-modulated turbulence. According to their best model the changes of the surface radius may be 1000 times larger than those at the depth of 5 Mm. We use f-mode oscillation fre...

Changes in the subsurface stratification of the Sun with the 11-year activity cycle

We report on the changes of the Sun’s subsurface stratification inferred from helioseismology data. Using SOHO/MDI (SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory/Michelson Doppler Imager) data for the last 9 years and, more precisely, the temporal variation of f-mode frequencies, we have computed the variation of the radius of subsurface layers of the Sun by applying helioseismic inversions. We have found...
